How to Handle a Job Offer When You’re Waiting on Another One

It’s one of the more stressful situations in a job search. You’ve put in the work, gone through the interviews, and now an offer has landed on your table. The problem is you’re still waiting to hear back from another employer, one that might be an even better fit. What do you do? Do you accept and risk missing out on something better? Do you stall and risk losing what’s already in front of you? The good news is there’s a professional and respectful way to handle this that most people don’t know about.

Don’t Panic and Don’t Rush

The first thing to remember is that you don’t have to make a decision the moment an offer arrives. It is completely normal and professionally acceptable to ask for a few days to review the offer before responding. Most employers expect this and a reasonable request for time will rarely raise any red flags.

Something simple like “Thank you so much for the offer. I’m very excited about this opportunity and I’d love a few days to review everything carefully before formally accepting” is professional, gracious, and buys you the time you need without saying anything misleading.

Reach Out to the Other Employer Right Away

As soon as you have an offer in hand reach out to the other employer immediately. Let them know where you stand without revealing too much detail. You don’t need to mention the competing offer by name but you can let them know that you’re moving through the process with another opportunity and ask if there’s any update on their timeline.

Something like “I wanted to follow up on my application as I’m currently working through another opportunity and would love to know if there’s been any movement on your end” is direct, honest, and signals that you’re a candidate worth moving on. Sometimes this is exactly the nudge an employer needs to speed up their process.

Be Honest Without Oversharing

There is a difference between being transparent and sharing more than you need to. You don’t owe either employer a play by play of your job search. What you do owe them is honesty if they ask directly and professionalism throughout the process.

If the employer with the offer asks whether you’re considering other opportunities it’s okay to say yes. Most employers respect candidates who are honest about their situation and it rarely hurts your chances. What does hurt your chances is being evasive or saying something that turns out to be misleading later on.

Weigh Both Opportunities Carefully

While you’re buying yourself time use it well. Think carefully about both opportunities. Which role aligns better with your long term goals? Which company culture feels like a better fit? Which offer is stronger when you look at the full picture including salary, benefits, growth potential, and day to day responsibilities?

Sometimes the offer that came in first is actually the better one once you look at everything side by side. Don’t assume the opportunity you’re waiting on is automatically better just because it feels more exciting in the moment. Make the decision based on what’s actually in front of you.

Accept or Decline With Professionalism

Once you’ve made your decision handle it with care regardless of which way you go. If you accept the first offer let the other employer know as soon as possible that you’ve accepted a position and are withdrawing from consideration. Keep it brief, gracious, and respectful. The professional world is smaller than it seems and how you handle these moments matters.

If you decide to wait for the second offer and it doesn’t come through, go back to the first offer and handle that conversation with honesty and humility. Not every situation works out perfectly but how you conduct yourself throughout the process says a lot about who you are professionally.
